NORFOLK, Va. — The Monacan High School Chiefs lost their state semifinal playoffs game in heart-breaking fashion Friday night.
With five seconds left to play and down by two points, Lake Taylor High School lined up for a game-winning field goal. The Monacan Chiefs blocked the kick and the Monacan players started to celebrate believing they had won the game 14-12.
However, the blocked kick did not cross the line of scrimmage. That meant the ball remained “live” and the game was not over.
As the Monacan crowed celebrated, a player for Lake Taylor scooped up the ball and scored the game-winning touchdown. Lake Taylor won the game 19-14.
Video of the bizarre ending was posted all over the web and is featured above.
Congratulations on a great season to the Chiefs, and to Lake Taylor for moving on to the title game!
Lake Taylor (Norfolk) will play Salem High School in the 4A State Championship at Liberty University on Sat 12/13 at 4:30 pm.
